ATF+4® Licensing Program

About the ATF+4® Licensing Program

The ATF+4® Automatic Transmission Fluid formulation is exclusive to Chrysler Group LLC and ATF+4® is a registered trademark. The Center for Quality Assurance (CQA) monitors quality standards through each step in the fluid's progress from license through commercialization.  Each blender and re-brander involved in the production and sale of ATF+4® must be licensed, facility accredited and undergo a range of product testing prior to final licensing.  Licensed brand names are periodically market-sampled to ensure consistent quality.

ATF+4® Blender Licensing

A blender is a company that manufactures an approved formulation of ATF+4® and then sells the product to licensed rebranders or to the marketplace. Each formulation must have a unique license number.

Companies interested in becoming licensed blenders must submit a request for qualification of proposed formulations to CQA. The ATF+4® specification requires a unique additive system supplied by Lubrizol and extra high viscosity index base oils. Chrysler Group's ATF Committee reviews each blender application and determines the extent of testing necessary. Tests that are currently required include physical and chemical, wear, friction and elastomer testing.  If the applicant's qualification sample is approved, the blender then submits licensing documents, including copies of intended product labels.  Blenders submit monthly activity reports to CQA and keep CQA informed of any changes to blending or packaging facilities.  In the first year of licensing, blenders also submit a quarterly production sample to CQA for testing.

Each blender will be issued one license number for each formulation for each country in which there are blending or packaging facilities, regardless of the number of facilities it has in that country; or the number of brand names it markets under; or the territories it markets in.

ATF+4® Rebrander Licensing

A rebrander is a company that purchases approved ATF+4® from a licensed blender and then packages and markets the product under its own trade name and license number.

Companies that want to package fluid formulated and manufactured by licensed blenders must submit licensing documents, including product labels, to CQA. Upon licensing approval, the company must submit a production sample to CQA for verification testing.  CQA may conduct inspections to check facilities for delivery, handling and process controls.  Rebranders submit monthly activity reports to CQA and keep CQA informed of any changes to packaging facilities.
